HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAVE?
What’s So Great About Nitrogen?
It’s true, the most beneficial characteristic of nitrogen is that it is an “inert” gas, which means it is a property-free, non-reactive substance or, more simply put, it’s “nothing,” which is exactly what you should be filling tires with: Nothing but pressure. And herein lies much of the confusion surrounding nitrogen. It is not what it IS that makes it such a remarkable inflation medium, but what it IS NOT. Regular air is already 79.1% nitrogen. The problem with regular air is that is also contains about 20% oxygen. While essential to almost every living organism … like you and me…oxygen is generally hazardous to anything that isn't alive ... think “oxidation,” more commonly known as rot, rust and corrosion. Because nitrogen is an inert gas and oxygen free, internal rim corrosion, tire rot and oxidation as well as condensation formation are all eliminated. As advantageous as these benefits are, there is a greater benefit to eliminating oxygen: better pressure retention.
As you probably have heard, a molecule of nitrogen is much larger (about 400% larger) than a molecule of the oxygen found in regular air. Hence, while air filled tires typically lose 1-2 psi every month through normal permeation, nitrogen filled tires, when filled at the proper purity, typically lose no pressure … from permeation. Obviously properly inflated tires provide less rolling resistance and therefore greater fuel economy. They also run cooler, wear less and generally last longer.
Many of the grand claims you hear about nitrogen are true. You can enjoy up to 10% better fuel economy, 30+% increased tire life and enhanced safety by inflating and properly maintaining your tires with nitrogen, as opposed to filling your tires with air and forgetting them, which is a growing problem as vehicle manufacturers continue to expand the duration between suggested service intervals. However, these benefits are not due to the “magic” of nitrogen, but the elimination of oxygen.
What is magic is how combining nitrogen with a comprehensive Tire Inflation Maintenance Program can increase your service business. Cars don't break like they used to or, according to vehicle manufacturers, need to be serviced as often. Fewer customer visits always means fewer sales opportunities. However, if you and your staff have the discipline to ask every customer (see script below) if they would like to convert their tires to Go Green nitrogen, you'll see your customers more often than ever … and sell more service.
Remember, when your customers buy Go Green, they not only enjoy Free Tire Repair & Replacement Coverage and Roadside Assistance but are also enrolled in our Tire Inflation Maintenance Program and reminded to return to your service drive every month via text messages, newsletters and Facebook…and you enjoy the industry’s best Customer Retention and Management System including our new Tire Tracker that enables you to track every customers’ tire wear.
Selling Go Green
Go Green Nitrogen, like most maintenance services, can be sold either at the counter while the customer’s work order is being generated, or presented to the customer while their vehicle is being serviced. To pre-sell Go Green, simply ask the customer upon their arrival, when writing up their initial work order:
“Do you have air or nitrogen in your tires?”
If they reply “air,” ask them:
“Would you like to convert your tires to Go Green Nitrogen today? Your tires will maintain constant pressure much longer and you’ll enjoy better fuel economy, longer tire life and enhanced safety. It works, and it’s backed by a membership in the Go Green Auto Club that includes free roadside assistance for almost any reason as well as tire repair and replacement benefits.”
We have found that when a Go Green conversion is presented in this simple fashion, almost 30% of all customers will say yes. Interestingly, we have also found that when Go Green is offered with a tire purchase, almost 95% of consumers will purchase Go Green.
Another proven way to sell Go Green conversions is to inform the customer, while their vehicle is being serviced that:
“While servicing your vehicle we noticed your tire pressure was low. I recommend you convert your tires to Go Green Nitrogen. Not only will your tires maintain constant pressure much longer, but you’ll also enjoy better fuel economy, longer tire life and enhanced safety. It really works, and it’s backed by a membership in the Go Green Auto Club that includes free roadside assistance for almost any reason as well as tire repair and replacement benefits.”
This method is almost always appropriate as air inflated tires typically lose 1-2 pounds of pressure every month. So, virtually every vehicle will have underinflated tires…and every customer will benefit from going Green.
